Typography Basics Every Website Needs

Typography does more work on a website than almost any other design element — it’s how the vast majority of your content actually gets consumed. A few fundamentals go a long way.

Limit your type scale

Two font families is usually enough — one for headings, one for body text. More than that and a site starts to feel visually noisy.

Sizing that respects reading

  • Body text: 16–18px minimum for comfortable reading
  • Line height: roughly 1.4–1.6x the font size
  • Line length: aim for 50–75 characters per line

Hierarchy over decoration

Use size, weight, and color — not just font choice — to create a clear hierarchy between headings, subheadings, and body copy so visitors can scan a page before committing to read it.
